Networkers Beware!

I’ve been reading a few newspaper articles lately about the increase in popularity of networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook and how they are increasing the risk of identity theft. Many people who use these sites are posting details on their real names, their date of birth, their employment, where they live and the names of their kids - all information that can be exploited. As a result, I’ve decided to remove some info on my Facebook profile and increased my privacy levels.

Yes, I think you’re right! There are so many people with bad intentions! I’m on netlog, a friend said me it was very well. But now I’m very sad to see that it’s really a space where people want not friendly relations but always other intentions. It brings nothing and no need internet to become stupide.
We come back from The Tall Ship’s Races wich made a stopping-place in Toulon. Some of the ships were more than 100 meters long with marvelous prow! I’ll do a post later about it!
Have a beautiful week!

Yes, it’s very sad that these things exists! I’ve never reveal my real name in the internet. Or were I live. No no. Best to be on the safe side.

Short of time, butt still wanted to give you some summer hugs from Fårö :-)

I do understand your point of view. I have decided to stay though - at least for a while and see whats happening.

Thanks for the heads up on that! And thanks for the birthday wishes you gave me! :-) ((()))

I always find it amusing just how much information people willingly post about themselves. It’s like walking up to a random stranger, and giving them your name, address and phone number and walking away.

I just don’t get it. *shakes head*

It is scarey to think of that.
My Son who’s business revolves around RSS feed has explained to me that all of our details are available to any hacker if we even have registered one of our programs like Windows, or we did any registration to our online provider.
He said, that basically, to a good hacker, any of our personal info is available.
In Canada we use debit for purchasing things. Our debit cards are attached to our bank accounts. Even the info on there is sent through the phone lines in packets that can be retreived by hackers.
My Son says that identity theft is now the new fad and anyone is a target, but companies are putting info failsafes in to aid us in a quick recovery of our stuff, ways of ensuring we are not responsible, if it happens to us.

Twenty years ago home invasions to steel things while people were asleep were big in Canada. Now, it is identity theft.
Next we will be left alone when hackers trend out corporate theft because the profits are higher.

Scarey and negative yes, but I think we will just have to roll with it.
If you have ever purchased or officially restistered anything online in your life, you are already “On The List” and you can’t do anything about it.

Wow, that is such a good point! Thanks for the tip.

I agree - I made sure my son’s and daughter’s facebook/myspace account profiles were clean of any identifying info. Mine is in my pen name, with nothing to identify who I really am. :)
