WOO HOO! My Mac finally arrived today and I’ve been playing around with it. My biggest concern was that I wouldn’t be able to find anything because I’m so used to using a Windows system but everything seems so simple. There are a few things I’ve yet to discover and I also need to install Leopard but I’m saving that for the weekend. It’s all so elegant though and boy, is it quiet! My other laptop has a really noisy fan and it used to drive me crazy!
So far, I’m sticking with Safari because it seems to be doing all that I need although I have to admit to hating smooth fonts. I’m getting used to it though but I never used it on any of the other browsers. I have no idea if you can turn it off because I like viewing web pages the way they were made and now I’m stuck with the same font on every site - even my own! It just seems wierd to me. In Opera, you can tell it to use either your own style or render the web page as the creator intended which is what I prefer. Now, the Mac is dictating how a page looks and this might be a problem for me when I’m messing around with websites.
I bought the AirPort Express Base Station as well and it was so easy to set up, in fact it was less trouble than the Netgear one I used before. Thankfully, I managed to network the old laptop for internet use so there’s no worries there. I have a lot of stuff on my old laptop that I’m leaving there, such as photos and music, so I’m relieved it can connect with no problems. I tried networking the two laptops but it didn’t work - I think that exceeds my technical know-how.
So far, I’m quite taken with the Mac and there have been no problems whatsoever and I hope that doesn’t change when I add Leopard. I must admit I thought I was buying the Mac with Leopard already installed but I guess not! It will be the weekend before I can really give Mac a proper test drive though and get some of my stuff installed.
I just noticed my mouse doesn’t jump around like it did on the old one. I used to start typing something and before I knew it the cursor would jump into the middle of another sentence and I’d have to delete the mess. Some of the keys are in different places on the keyboard as well and for the life of me I can’t find the delete button and keep having to backspace. Some experimenting is in order!
I’ve never ever used a Mac. just seen it in a distance in the shops. Looks kind of stylish, but I’ve no idea how it is to work with. though there really are a lot of people that is Mac-admirers and refusing to use Windows, so I guess it must be pretty good.
Good luck with the figuring out part
