Saving Sundance and Rainbow

Just before Christmas, Mr Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister of State for Energy, announced exploration in the Moray Firth Conservation Area for gas and oil reserves was likely to go ahead despite European preservation laws. The Moray Firth is the only place in the North Sea to house a unique pod of bottlenose dolphins which attract visitors from all over the world. The govt must not be allowed to do this! The WDCS have started a campaign to prevent this from happening and they have a special e-card on their website which you can send to the govt. All you have to do is fill in your details in the right column and then press send. If exploration goes ahead, the dolphin pod could be forced out of the area and is likely to face extinction.

Dolphins aren’t the only marine life in danger and you can watch a heart wrenching report on how the Moray Firth team had to put a baby whale to sleep which had beached on the shore. The baby’s mother was nowhere to be found and if it had been released into the water, it would’ve starved to death as it was still reliant on its mother’s milk.

I’ve adopted two of these dolphins, Sundance and Rainbow, and receive regular reports on their progress. The WDCS observes these beautiful creatures from a distance and use donations to conserve their habitat. They also offer tours where you can observe the dolphins but never close enough to harm them.

Couldn’t agree more: save the dolphins. The only one I’ve seen is in a water world - they live better in natural surroundings.

Wishing you a great weekend Caledonia :-)

Dolphins are the sweetest! That is so sad about the baby whale. :-( I’ve bookmarked the sites. :-)

They can ignore European preservation laws?! And what’s going to happen if they do find oil and/or gas? Just more pollution to be released into the atmosphere. I can’t help feeling they’d be better putting their energies into something more sustainable.

They can ignore EU laws if they like but the Scottish Govt has the power to tell them no. Fingers crossed!

Luckily, there are people that care (like you) about them. Oh, I hate when we humans are destroying the wildlife.

We wanted to see dolphins on one of our trips to Scotland, but we only spotted a seal trying to steal fish from some nets outside the east coast near Aberdeen.

When we were on Iceland we saw one too at a distance when we went on a whale safari, no whales though. Which was very unusual according to them, to not see them I mean. so they gave us a free ticket for another tour another year - we still have the ticket IF we should go there again :-)
