Labels Need To GoFebruary 7th, 2008 @ 8:40 pm
I was reading an newspaper article the other day about John Barrowman who plays Capt Jack Harkness in the BBC show Torchwood and once again I was struck by how the media seem to have this obsessive need to label people. You see, John is gay which in itself is not a problem but I do hate how he is constantly referred to in the papers as “the gay actor” or “the gay singer”. I mean why does the press need to keep underlining the fact that he is gay? Is that really relevant when discussing his career?
If you read a story on Brad Pitt, they don’t call him “the straight actor” or “the heterosexual actor” that would just be ridiculous. So, why can’t John just be “the actor” and “the singer”? It all seems really ridiculous when you consider how political correctness has reached levels of sheer stupidity in this country. Maybe the PC brigade should concentrate on dropping labels rather than worrying about whether the colour black causes offence.

You’re so very right!! some labels are absolutely unnecessary…
this reminds me of my SIL and BIL who once were introduced as So and So and their adopted children… who cares?

I must agree with you there. It has reached a level of stupidity, for instance the fact that now we can no longer call chalk boards “black boards” in fear that it be taken as a racist remark (!), and yet we insist on labelling these people non-stop!
