As suspected, my brother texted me on Friday afternoon to see if I wanted to see the new Star Trek film at the cinema. I’m not a huge ST fan but my brother loves it so I’ve been dragged to see all the films in the franchise, apart from the last one, at some point or another. He knows I love sci fi so I’m a safe bet when he wants to see something! I got my own back on him by getting him hooked on BSG which is probably my favourite sci if series of all time now, other than the whole Star Wars thing.
I actually quite enjoyed the film and found it really funny in parts. The cast was very cleverly chosen and the only one I had trouble believing was Karl Urban’s McCoy. There was just something about it that didn’t quite gel for me but I got used to him in time. And huge kudos to English actor Simon Pegg for his believable Scottish accent, it is so refreshing not to have Hollywood go down the twee Brigadoon route. I get the urge to shoot the tv every time American shows introduce Scots characters with atrocious “Och, aye the noo” accents.
I enjoyed watching the friendship unfold between the regulars and thought the whole messing up the timeline thing was well done despite my usual antipathy for it. I know that part isn’t sitting well with a lot of the fanboy geeks but it’s a really clever plan to continue the franchise without worrying about continuity. I also liked the actor who played Kirk and didn’t miss Shatner’s ego at all. The actress playing Uhuru was stunningly beautiful and I really didn’t mind her relationship with Spock. It seemed logical to me! I’m not a Zach Quinto fan but he did a good Spock and I’m not going to gush on about it just to annoy my friend Natascha (spirited_lizard on LJ) who is a huge fan.
They showed a preview of the new Terminator movie and I’m quite excited about that. Again, not a huge Terminator fan but god, do I love Christian Bale. I’m sure we’ll be going to see that too.
Anyway, it was a good way to spend yet another rainy afternoon. We seem to have reverted back to winter again and it seems a bit unfair having to suffer hay fever when it is so damn wet and cold. I had a terrible week at work and suffered major confusion over what day it was after the Monday Bank Holiday. That always happens to me! We have a few new members of staff and the place just seems really unsettled just now.
I also had a couple of really nasty phone calls from solicitors who were totally clueless because their heads were too far up their own asses. I was seriously tempted to tell them to go frak off. It more or less put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day but my boss told me to pass those calls on to management in future because I don’t get paid to put up with their attitude. To make up for it, I later had a call from this Aussie chap who sounded totally sexy and that lifted my mood. Yum!
Okay, my roller blind just decided to close down on me and I’m currently sitting in the dark watching reruns of The Beastmaster on Zone Horror. Aussie actor Daniel Goddard is a stud.
I have a load of shows to catch up with on iTunes and it’s busy downloading about 4 episodes of Prison Break and Supernatural. I’m downloading without watching until the end of the season so I can watch them in one run. I hate episodic television. I’m also going to download the pilot of Caprica; I so need something to replace BSG.
Hope everyone is doing okay. I seriously need to catch up on some blogs!
